Gary Beals is a Canadian R&B/soul singer best known for capturing the hearts of the nation as he became the 1st runner up on the popular reality television series, Canadian Idol. His first self titled album debut on the top 10 of the Canadian sales charts and was nominated for a Juno award.
Gary was born and raised in Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia a predominately black community where his passion for music began. At a young age, Gary’s first performances were at church, and that is when he realized his voice was a gift and could garner a reaction from the audience with his God given talent. Gary grew up listening to gospel, r&b, soul and funk, mostly due to the musical tastes of his parents. At the age of 14, Gary along with his brother and friends formed a gospel group called ‘Light of Day’. It was then that Gary really honed in on his performance capabilities as the group sang at various churches and community events around the province. The group eventually dissembled but Gary’s love for music was never lost.
After Gary’s success on Idol, he moved to Toronto leaving behind his close-knit community to take on the big city life of Toronto, the music mecca for Canadian artists. Gary with his aspirations to live out his dream teamed up with Orin Issacs, a multi Juno Award-winning producer and international multi-platinum producer, Marcus Kane. The result was Gary’s self-titled debut album which showcased Gary’s seasoned vocals and songwriting skills and went on to sell more than 10, 000 copies.
Gary continued to develop his musical sound and brand and independently released his second album, The Rebirth of… in June 2009. Gary introduced a more mature sound than his first album, combining his soulful, gospel sound with layers of musical influences, including pop, reggae, and hip-hop that showcased a range of tracks filled with rhythm, inspiration, and vibrancy! The first single from the album, “I Know You’re Out There,” a high-energy track was on rotation on radio stations across the country. The second single, “Jump Off,” featuring Blessed (released in summer of 2009) reached the top 60 on the Mediabase CHR Charts making it a summer jam accompanied by a video, receiving over 50,000 views on YouTube.
As a result of Gary’s hard work, he is not only a Juno nominee but a six-time African Nova Scotian Music Award winner, Canadian Independent Music Award and East Coast Music Award winner, a Canadian Urban Music Award nominee, Canadian Radio Music Award nominee and a Planet Africa Rising Star recipient.
Fifteen years after Idol, Gary is still actively performing all over North America as he continues to grow and evolve as an artist, living his life authentically on his terms. Gary aspires to be an artist that is a voice and an inspiration for those who haven’t fully realized their inner strength to pursue their dreams and live their lives authentically. His next project release is said to offer a more profound evolution as Gary introduces you to a more refined and conscious version of himself. His hope is to release inspiring, thought-provoking, positive, joyous and timeless music that listeners can connect and relate to. Gary Beals is not only back and better than ever, but bound to make a positive impact on the growing global community.
